Presenter: Dr. Catherine Tong
Supporting EDI through simulation
Registration: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZclfuqtrjwvGta3XmE71kJ1vzu0kqSTUr27
Dr. Catherine Tong is an emergency physician and the faculty development lead at the Waterloo Regional Campus. She is passionate about creating and implementing educational activities to support objectives in EDI (equity, diversity, inclusivity) and reconciliation. Many faculty members, as well as learners, are not prepared to identify and manage incidences of prejudice and injustice effectively in healthcare and the clinical teaching environment. Simulation education is an established pedagogy designed for difficult scenarios. Learning objectives in a SIM case frequently include communication skills and are achieved through careful structuring of the case and skillful performance of actors. Simulation has also been adopted in faculty development for emotionally difficult situations (e.g. giving negative feedback to learners). We propose simulation, including the use of actors, can be leveraged to provide an opportunity for skill development as a part of a EDI curriculum.

The lead discussant is Samuel Jarman [(BA (Hons) Kinesiology, MOMSc (Osteopathic Practitioner), MSc Student (Health Science Education)] who will identify challenges & solutions and consider future directions for measuring transfer of learning.
This talk will present the two current paradigms of measuring transfer of learning. The two paradigms that will be discussed are the Direct Application (DA)/Sequestered Problem Solving (SPS) paradigm and Preparation for Future Learning (PFL). The initial discussion is presented via a pre-recorded video which describes the DA/SPS and PFL paradigms as well as how they relate to identification of near and far transfer. The pre-recorded video is available to watch prior to the online meeting. The online meeting will be a guided discussion of the concepts presented in the video so that attendees are able to engage the concepts in a professional environment.
